An Initiative of Shurer Dhara
MusicforDevelopment
Changing lives through music. Since 2009, MFD has worked at the intersection of art and social development — proving that a song can open doors that nothing else can.
“Music means happiness and love. With love and your support we can change the lives of underprivileged children of Bangladesh.”
— Rezwana Choudhury Bannya, Project Leader
Our Story
Born from a belief that music belongs to everyone
Music for Development (MFD) started in 2009 as a project of Shurer Dhara, a premier college for Rabindrasangeet and Bengali performing arts based in Dhaka. It began with a vision to improve the lives of children from the slum areas of Dhaka through music education. In its first year, MFD was funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
What makes MFD unique is its holistic approach. Music is the entry point — but the goal is to grow well-rounded, empowered individuals. Students learn to sing, dance, and perform, and they also receive academic tutoring, vocational skills, and a community that believes in their future.
The children of MFD come from some of Dhaka's most under-resourced communities. Many arrive without access to formal education. Through MFD, they find their voice — literally and figuratively.

What We Do
Our students are underprivileged children from different slum areas of Dhaka and its adjoining areas. Although music is our main focus we also give the children of MFD extra tutoring in mathematics, Bengali, English, coding and vocational training — helping these underprivileged children to grow up to be successful and happy citizens of Bangladesh.
